I recently met my girlfriend Barb out for our favorite Artichoke dip and white wine at the Delafield Brewhaus. She ran in, breezed by my table and made a powerful comment: "Be right back - bangs suck!"
This brought to light a question most women face at some point in their life: Bangs or no bangs?
They come in and out, and once you have them, they're a pain to grow out.
I've been both pro-bangs and anti-bangs in my life, and at this point I'm pretty sure I'll never have a strong opinion one way or the other. I haven't cut them for my daughter, because I know all about the tedious process of growing them out.
There are pros to having them; one of the most obvious is the ability to hide a zit on your forehead. This theory bombs out, however, if the blemish arises on some other area of your face. (Never be tempted to cut new bangs to hide a zit. Call in sick and cut your PTO losses.)
If, like me, you have hair that is neither curly or straight, you'd also better be sure you have at least 1 minute each morning to dry them straight. There's nothing quite like the freakish bang-part, with hair slicing off to each side and trying to meet in the middle.
They grow fast (but only when you want them to stay short) - if you can't afford the time or the professional bang-trim, you'd better be darn sure of your self-trimming abilities. Remember... If you trim while your hair is wet it will shrink up, and you could end up looking a lot like Winona Ryder's character in Beetlejuice.
The key to making a proper choice in bang-cutting is time. Never do it on impulse, no matter what.
